With our improved 2020 commission and streamlined on-boarding there has never been a better time to work with UTP as a Business Development Manager (BDM)! But you may be curious, what is life as a BDM like? And what skills might you need to succeed? We asked long-standing BDM Martin Harrington to give you a flavour of the BDM life…
Q. How long have you worked with UTP and what first attracted you to the role?
A. I’ve worked as a self-employed BDM since 2014 when a previous Merchant Service company lost its franchise. I wanted to work for an ethical company and so the UTP partnership with Barclaycard gave me a great deal of assurance. I then found that the initially training and support proved very helpful.
Q. What do you consider your biggest achievement as a BDM?
A. A great deal of my business derives from networking. At one particular event, I asked for an introduction to a local Vets that had three premises. One of the guests stabled their horse with the owner of the vets. From that introduction I obtained the business for fourteen terminals. On another occasion a fellow networker overheard the manager of a charity shop that they were looking to start taking card payments. As a consequence, I now supply all their stores as they found those stores with card payment take ten times more turnover than those without the facility.
Q. Why do you like working with UTP?
A. The support and advice I receive from UTP office staff is excellent. This gives me the confidence to recommend UTP/Barclaycard to all my clients. As my business comes from networking, what I tell my customers has be correct otherwise my reputation would soon disappear.
Q. What skills do you think it takes to be a BDM?
A. When I first started in Merchant Services, I soon realised there are a lot of unscrupulous agents out there. Offering rates and promises that could not be met. Once the business had been secured, they would never be seen again. I believe my skill is honesty and integrity. Being able to listen to what the customer needs and not what you want to sell is paramount. I also follow up and return to install the terminals as service is so important.
Q. Do you have any tips for those wanting to become a BDM?
A. As for tips for becoming a BDM it is important to set goals and have ambition. Enthusiasm is contagious and customer soon warm. Having a sense of humour is a great benefit. People buy from people.

I am very pro-active on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. It costs nothing and it’s a good way of getting your name and achievements out there. I’m well known as Martin The ChipnPin man. Although, I will point out that Twitter has to be treated like networking. You build up relationships: Know, Like and Trust. Then people will recommend you.
